Pine Island, Florida is not the place to be if you are looking to fish from the surf or piers, however, the Matlacha Bridge that gets a lot of attention from shore anglers. You’ll have to go to nearby Captiva, Sanibel or even Fort Myers Beach to find the beaches in this area. You won’t find miles of beaches on Pine Island. You can also access the islands of Sanibel and Captiva within minutes depending on what type of boat and where you are actually staying on Pine Island. The 500-acre refuge has been expanded to over 17 islands and consists of densely forested red and black mangroves with little uplands habitat. The refuge has also been designated as a Florida State Aquatic Preserve. The refuge was established by President Theodore Roosevelt through Executive Order 939 in 1908 to protect the thousands of herons, egrets, and pelicans that were being hunted to support the plume trade in the early 1900's. The Pine Island NWR is located on the southwest coast of Florida, north of Sanibel Island in the Pine Island Sound.
